From a young age thanks to my creative parents and the well stocked art supplies cupboard by the kitchen table I developed an appreciation for all sorts of creative practices
I am Barbara Lormans, an artist and printmaker working from my small home studio in Blenheim Aotearoa New Zealand.
In 2019 I attended a printmaking workshop and was instantly hooked. Whether it is the carving or construction of the printing block, the swish of ink from the brayer or the surprises and happy accidents that roll from the printing press they all contribute to a way of creating that puts me securely in my happy place.
From a young age thanks to my creative parents and the well stocked art supplies cupboard by the kitchen table I developed an appreciation for all sorts of creative practices and began expanding my own skills across many art disciplines. I have nurtured my creativity through self directed explorations as well as life drawing classes, workshops and winter and summer schools.
“The themes and ideas investigated in my work are often a response to the natural environment”
Luckily, I enjoy the challenge of trying new things and experimenting with techniques and different media and love exploring and researching things for myself.
That said, I am also very appreciative of the generosity of many artists that share and explain their work and the processes they use in the online art community.
My first home was at the bottom of the South Island Te Waipounamu, on green rolling hills with views from the back paddock that stretched to the far south.
From there the weather would roll in carrying the chill of Antarctica on what the locals described as a lazy wind (straight through you rather than around). Brrrrr.
I now live at the other end of the island on the flat expanse of the Wairau Plains in Marlborough, surrounded by hills and mountains and best known for its Sauvignon Blanc and sunshine.
